Pedagogy of Language skills L S R W

Pedagogy of Learning and Acquisition

1. Overview of LSRW Framework

Natural Order & Primary vs. Secondary Skills

Language acquisition naturally follows the sequential order of Listening $\rightarrow$ Speaking $\rightarrow$ Reading $\rightarrow$ Writing:

  • Primary Skills (Oral-Aural): Listening and Speaking are acquired first in natural L1 settings. They form the foundation of oral competence.
  • Secondary Skills (Literacy): Reading and Writing are formal literacy skills acquired primarily through structured instruction.
  • Receptive Skills (Input): Listening and Reading involve receiving and decoding meaningful messages.
  • Productive Skills (Output): Speaking and Writing involve encoding and producing active communication.

2. Pedagogical Breakdowns of the Four Skills

Language Skill Skill Type Sub-skills & Core Mechanics Pedagogical Techniques
Listening (L) Receptive / Oral Phoneme discrimination, listening for gist (skimming), listening for specific details (scanning), inferring tone/attitude. Dictogloss, pre-listening schema activation, bottom-up parsing, top-down predicting.
Speaking (S) Productive / Oral Fluency vs. Accuracy, stress/intonation, turn-taking, pragmatic appropriateness, strategic negotiation. Role-plays, information-gap tasks, pair interviews, communicative drills, debates.
Reading (R) Receptive / Written Skimming, scanning, intensive reading, extensive reading, critical inference, decoding schema. SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), graphic organizers, silent reading.
Writing (W) Productive / Written Mechanics (spelling, punctuation), coherence & cohesion, paragraph structuring, genre conventions. Process approach (Brainstorm, Draft, Revise, Edit), Product approach, Genre analysis, peer feedback.

3. Processing Models & Assessment

Cognitive Mechanisms & Evaluation Strategies

  • Bottom-Up Processing: Decoding language starting from the smallest linguistic units (sounds, letters, words) up to higher grammatical structures.
  • Top-Down Processing: Using background knowledge, domain schema, and context to predict and construct overall message meaning.
  • Interactive Model: Simultaneous, dynamic integration of both bottom-up decoding and top-down schema processing.
  • Integrated Skills Approach: Combining LSRW within holistic communicative tasks (e.g., listening to a lecture, taking notes, reading a summary, writing an essay).
